Meat Market, NYC – 2011. This place was already slated for demolition when I shot the sign. I had walked by and loved the signage on this garage for over 20 years. I thought about coming back that night with a power driver and crow bar and appropriating this soon-to-be piece of scrap, but my hard-won honesty took over and I thought to myself “No, I don’t do that any more. I won’t do that. I won’t take down that sign. It’s illegal. It’s not right. I don’t steal signs any more, even from condemned property.”
The next day, someone had stolen the sign and I was quietly kicking myself.
